Back to school bio

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

My new class has officially started today. One of the things that every course wants you to do is to drum up a bio about yourself, and it has to be different than your previous courses. Meh. So I got around to writing mine up.

Hello friends.

My name is Lewis Moten, but I often go by the name of Lewie. Since early childhood, I have always been tinkering with computers. I have taught myself how to program through library books, and saving files to an audiocassette tape on an Atari 400. Over time, I have learned many programming languages and used quite a few operating systems.
I have had interesting jobs in my past, such as catching chickens, operating amusement park rides, as well as working at a few fast-food chains. During my employment at these different jobs, I would always have my head in code and learning new tricks.

The majority of my professional career has been in the Information Technology (IT) field. I have worked with my current employer, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), for the past eight years. I currently hold the title of Senior Member Programmer Analyst in my department. I program with the web, databases, and desktop software. As far as expertise goes, I am usually the “go to” guy to for troubleshooting, coming up with theories, architecture, and guidance. I put on many hats including those of a programmer, database administrator (DBA), graphic illustrator, 3D modeler, and an analyst to propose solutions and determine possible scenarios of solving requirements.

Although I am highly proficient in my field, it is becoming harder get placed on contracts in positions that match my skill sets. I am pursuing a degree so that my resume can be used to bid on more contracts. With a degree, I would also have a better chance of finding employment if I were ever to lose my job. In addition, a degree is grounds for an automatic pay adjustment.

My hobbies generally revolve around virtual environments. I have a blog that I post to almost daily about my experiences, opinions, and personal projects. I also have a podcast in which I interview people, or just talk about my opinions. In general, I like to play with technology.

I am located in the Eastern Time zone.
