Sony PSP Viruses
Reports of a new virus called Trojan.PSPBrick have been popping up around the internet. The virus deletes four critical files from the Sony PSP’s operating system so that it will no longer be able to boot up. Only devices that have had there firmware (version 2.0) modified so that they can run software on the PSP are affected.
Now I don’t have a PSP device as they are really expensive in my book. I tried out a Nintendo Gameboy Advance a few years ago, but found that I never used it during my daily commutes on the bus and metro. That time was better spent resting. I gave it away to my nephew along with my small collection of games.
I do have a Sony Playstation 2 console that can connect to the internet to download and play games. Rather then using a mod chip like everyone else, I paid the two hundred dollars to get a Linux kit from Sony themselves. Along with the operating system, I received a hard drive, network adapter, a monitor cable, keyboard and mouse. I admit, it is a little painful to install if you don’t have the rite kind of monitor for it, but at least it is legal. Since I don’t use it much and it is a special blend of Linux, I am not too worried about it getting a virus.
I am looking forward to upgrade my Sony Playstation 2 within the next year to a Sony Playstation 3 when it becomes available. Both Sony and Microsoft are comming out with new game consoles that are more like computers. With the upgrade in technology and interoperability over the internet, my concerns are growing. Along with the display of games in the store, are we also going to see virus protection software for our gaming consoles?
