Raise your own meat, if you can

My brother is a health nut. Actually, he’s just a vegetarian. I check in on things from time to time about vegetarians, organic food and what not. I came accross an article advising how to be frugal about organic foods. There were some helpful tips to avoid the high priceson being frugal.

One tip that caught my eye was the following:

If you have room to raise your own meat, you can save even more.

I’ll be the first to raise my hand and say that I’m a dirty thinker. I almost died laughing. Anyhow, my brother doesn’t eat meat at all. Last I checked, that was pretty much the definition of a vegetarian.

The article went on with a few other tips. Some were “no-brainers”. Others had me wondering what planet the auther was from. I’m sure my brother already considered most of these tips. Any how, for the rest of my readers, here is a summary of the tips:

I’m no vegetarian, but buying herbs and spices in bulk is really a great idea. :+: I had no idea herbs were so marked up until I went to one of those all-natural stores and bought some cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. by the pound. Those little jars in the grocery store are a rip-off!

From a health standpoint, I would agree, raising your own meat would be a more healthy alternative to that which you can buy in the store. But not entirely healthy. It may reduce the amount of growth hormones, antibiotics, and diseases your taking in. In addition, it could be more compassionate as the likelihood that the animals providing the meat would be raised in a more free-range fashion increase, as most people assume the meat in stores comes from farms as depicted by Charlotte’s Web. Another slight factor is if you are raising your own meat, I theorize that you may actually form some attachment to these animals, caring for them, and feeling guilt in causing their demise.

One very unfortunate thing about food, is that doing it on your own is very time consuming. It takes a group effort in the modern world where the cost of living is so high. It’s our high paced world and demand for low cost that has led to our grocery stores stocking genetically modified vegetables, and rushing chickens and such through the growth process.

As a new vegetarian, I miss meat to an extent, but most often I find this to be the case at barbeques where you easily recognize meat cooking by the smell of it in the air. Luckily, there are lots of alternatives out there. And it’s opened me up to various ethnic dishes.
