Google Talks. So what?

So now Google has released its own IM software. This isn’t anything big as we have had services from AOL, ICQ, Microsoft, Yahoo and Skype for many years now. The media seems to be making a big deal out of Googles ability to talk to people over the internet with a microphone. I don’t see why this is big. It’s not as if Google is the first one to do this. Everyone has been doing this. The only big thing is that Google is joining everyone else.
Skype would probably be the best program for internet telephony, as it also provides the option to have a phone number so people can call you from a regular phone. Anyone can leave you voice mail if you pay for the service, and you can also dial out to regular phone numbers.
So what exactly is different with Google Talk? What is it that is cutting edge here?

I don’t find anything very exciting about google talk. So I agree that it’s just your run of the mill messenger. There doesn’t seem to be a conference option either, unless I totally missed something.

I wont be using it. - It’s only news because the investing community, and open source advocates see it as a serious threat to Microsoft. There is also the factor that it’s their first “real” application, going beyond toolbars and helpful utilities.
Of all the instant messenger programs I’ve used, I use MSN the most. I’ll be very interested to see how this google talk evolves over the next 24 months, but I’ve a feeling the big contenders wont be losing much of their market.
