I got my digital voice recorder
I purchased a refurbished Olympus digital voice recorder W-10 a few days ago. It came to my doorstep today. Using the little gadget is very nice and convenient. It is small, easy to use, and picks up my voice clearly.
This gadget records about 45 minutes in high quality mode; an hour in standard, and two hours in long playback. I can’t make out what I am saying in long playback mode. The quality is horrible. This recorder also came with a camera - but just like all the reviews that I have read about it, the camera is very hard to use.
I’m having problems converting the WAV files to MP3’s. I use LAME to convert the WAV to MP3 files. All I hear is a high static sound like a waterfall. I think it has something to do with the codec used to create the WAV files. Looking at the properties, I can see the following:
- Bit Rate: 88kbps
- Audio sample size: 4 bit
- Channels: 1 (mono)
- Audio sample rate: 22 kHz
- Audio format: IMA ADPCM
I went into my control panel and looked at my hardware for the “Sounds and Audio Devices” program. I found the audio codecs and took a look at the properties. IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC was at the top of the list. Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC came rite after it. I am at a loss as to why I can not convert these WAV files into MP3s. I thought it was a simple process.
Anyway, I decided that I would attempt to hold the voice recorder up to my phone and post via audio blogger.
One problem I have with this method is that I’m limited to only 5 minutes of audio. The other is that the quality didn’t turn out as great as the WAV file itself. If you pay for audio blogger, you can upload MP3s and WAVs of up to 60 minutes (or call in by phone).

[…] My dreams, I feel, are still odd at best. I’m looking into a few gadgets that should help me out a bit better with my Dreamy Audio podcast. It seems Olympus is very popular with digital voice recorders. I’m looking for quality and capacity. One of them (WS-200S) stores about 4 and a half hours for its high quality mode. My current W-10 that I got used allows me 45 minutes in HQ Mode. Of course, I always go to ebay for my supplies. I see that I can knock of $30 on the WS-200S retail price and get it at $100 US. The W-10 is still selling for around $35 on eBay, a $65 savings. I got my W-10 for roughly $40 a year ago. Maybe I can resell it and only suffer a $5 loss. It doesn’t have any wear or tear showing and it still works just like new. […]

[…] I recently pulled out my W-10 Digital Voice Recorder and started grabbing the old files from it. I immediatley found two things that I just hated about this thing. First - the speed at wich files are transfered to the computer is very slow. The other is these thwap sounds. The recorder inserts these high noises of clicks, thwaps and scratches. I eventaully found a program to help me edit the files to remove the sounds called Audacity. The thing is, these sounds shouldn’t be there in the first place. Hopefully with the WS-200S that I just purchased, these problems will not be apparent anymore. […]
