Geocaching on Law & Order
I just got an interesting piece of news from Geocaching.com. It appears that this fun sport is going to be featured on Law & Order next week.
May 8 - Geocaching featured on Law & Order: Criminal IntentGeocaching is on the (fictional) police blotter next week! Set your VCRs or DVRs to record the May 8 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The upcoming episode “The Unblinking Eye” reveals the plot “A young actor is wounded and his fiancĂ©e killed, leading detectives to look into a high-tech treasure-hunting game called geocaching.”
For those of you that don’t know what GeoCaching is, I’ll summarize. It is a treasure hunting game. People get a container and hide it in a tree hollow, under some rocks, or somewhere near by (but not burried under dirt). A few items are stashed in the container (known as a cache, prounced “cash”). Then, they take a GPS device and record the Longitude and Latitude coordinates. Once they get online, they tell the world where the container is located.
As a fellow GeoCacher, I look for these cordinates using my own GPS device. Once I get there I start looking around for the object. My GPS device is accurate within 35 feet in most places - so I have a 70 foot area to look for the treasure.
Once I find the cache, I log my visit and swap an item I have brought with something that I found in the container. These are usually kids toys that you would find in a cereal box, a happy meal, or at the dollar store. You can also find things like crayons, match box cars, and the likes.
Although the prizes are childs-play, the adventure is not. Treking to the location is a great way to find out about places that you didn’t know about in your own area and is a great way to meet people who may be on the same adventures. I’ve met two families so far.
Search my blog for "geocaching" and you’ll see what it’s all about and some pictures of the stuff I found.

So you swap items with other geocachers? What do you do with the items you obtain? Are there specific rules?

Geocaching sounds like great fun…but I guess I’d have to get a GPS device first! (Maybe that’s part of the fun: an excuse for more gadgets!)
