Joysticks, Taxes, Shopping and Birds
About 10 years ago, I was introduced to an addictive little game called SubSpace. It was a fast-paced 2D space game. Many people would play it at the same time. You could go so far as to say it was one of the first MPOG’s out there.
What is really impressive about it is the speed of the game over a 28.8 modem back it its day when the internet was really starting to catch on with generation X. There is a long history about this game about how the original company pulled the plug after a year and then the game was reversed engineered.
I found out that this game was still around after reading MPOG:Multi-player online game on Shabootý.
After playing for 2 minutes, I realized that I needed a joystick really bad. I used to have an old 4 button Gravis joystick back in my day. Angel came with me and we found some nice joysticks that looked like the ones that most game consoles have. I saw a Gravis joystick there that looked like an upgraded version of my old one. It was the cheapest one there, but it was out of stock. I remember that my old one used to have a stick that screwed into it, but broke off. I didn’t have much use for it anyway.
Instead, I got the Logitech Dual Action Gamepad. Logitech is a brand name that I have grown to like for my audio, web-cam, trackball, and now my joystick needs as well.
Angel wanted to grab a bite to eat so I took her to the china buffet. She got some squid after showing it to me. I think she wanted to show off, but she ended up putting it on my plate and I chewed through it with delight. I went up to the Mongolian BBQ for my second dish. I had to explain to her and another person how it worked. Basically you choose the food that you want to mix together and then the cook will cook it for you while you wait. I wish I knew of a real Mongolian restaurant around here that I could show her.
After lunch, Angel told me to do the taxes. I politely told her that I needed her there to sign the papers. I don’t think she minded too much and I was happy that I didn’t have to make multiple trips to have her sign the papers. While I took care of the taxes, she went outside to do her thing. She watched the birds and also found a woman’s soaked checkbook. She brought it in and found the woman’s identity card and brought it up to the front desk as we left.
With the money that we owe on taxes from two years ago, I am still getting money left over from this years tax return. The two of us are more at peace with ourselves since the taxes have been taken care of.
We then went to shoppers to pick up some bread for the birds. I grabbed a few things that we needed around the house. After we packed the car with the goods, Angel walked over to a grassy area with her loaf of bread in the wind. Birds started flying over at first and then a few started coming a bit and hovering at a distance.
Angel would throw pieces of bread at them and they would catch it in mid-air. When Angel was half-way through the loaf of bread, she was surrounded by a hundred of these birds just hovering in the wind about 10 feet from her. She was impressed looking at all of them looking back at her. Just a big wall of birds.
I grabbed a few pictures with my phone and posted them on my flickr account.

i miss the mongolian grill i went to in WA. i’d just put all the raw cold stuff i wanted into a bowl and hand it to them, and they’d just slap it down on a big round grilly thing and push it around with sticks. it was almost as fun watching them grill it as it was to eat it. haven’t found anything around here that even comes close to it.

whatever is best.. I just couldnt imagine it cause I’m so used to the keyboard (having everything mapped in my head -like the specials)
why would you use a joystick?

[…] Usually I go to H&R Block every year. I spent $167 filing my taxes last year for state and federal returns. I haven’t figured out if there is a place on my tax forms to claim that fee. This year I’m getting frugal about everything. I’m trying to do things on my own - or with the assistance of the internet and cheap software. That means I have $167 extra in my pocket until the refund comes. Actually, I still have filing fees, and the price of the software. I’m still saving money, I think. […]
