Ghosts of the past

Monday, January 31st, 2005

When I had met my wife, I was living with a room mate – Tony. Angel would stay over at my place often and eventually found out a few secrets about Tony’s personal life that I was not aware of. Specifically, his heavy drug use. I was in denial at first, but she lead me to where he kept his stash and explained what some of the things were used for. She even went so far as to explain to me that one of his so-called “friends” was actually his dealer.

My world was turned upside down. I had gone through some tough experiences back in college where friends have died from this addiction. I did not want to go through the hardship and pain of this again.

I sat down with Angels mother and discussed ways that I could get out. We took a look at all of my finances and figured out how much money I had left to spare. It was possible that I could actually afford a mortgage, and she knew the rite people that I should contact who could handle my bad credit.

Shortly there after, my room mate had over dosed. His “friend” had called me from the hospital asking me if I know how to get in touch with Tony’s parents. I remember feeling weak and worn out just laying down in my bed. What can you do in a situation like this? I had emotionally cut off any bond that I had with Tony at this point. Call me heartless if you will.

About a year after I had purchased my house and moved out, I got wind through the grape vine that Tony had died. I got a little depressed about it over the next few days. I heard stories about things that had happened to him after I had left. One was about him sleeping at the place where he worked.

These kinds of rumors beat me up with guilt. I was thinking that I could have made a difference. I began wondering if I played a part into his demise. I didn’t just run out on him with the rent. He had assured me that he was getting an apartment with the same “friend” of his who had called me that uneventful night and we had left on solid ground.

I got over it and realized that he was bound to go down this road with or without me as a room mate. He had already made a choice and he wasn’t going to deter from his lifestyle.

Although there is a bad ending to this story, I’m going to turn it around and give you two good endings.

Today, Angel and I are married. We have a good life and privacy within our own home. A lot of good things have come to us because of my escape from Tony’s lifestyle. If it were not for Angel and her mother, I would have had to go through more pain living with Tony until his final days. I wouldn’t have a house, and I probably wouldn’t have been married to Angel until after Tony had died.

Tony’s “friend” is also better these days. The last I heard, he had cleaned up his act and joined a program. He has a better job and takes better care of himself.

You got a PGP? Yea, you know me …

I signed up over at the new forums for BlogAzoo. I started entering information into my personal profile up there and saw that they wanted a PGP key (Pretty Good Privacy).

I have a limited understanding of what this is all about. It has to do with sending signed messages as well as encrypting messages so that only the recipient can decrypt the message. The recipient also has the ability to verify that the message actually came from the sender.

I downloaded the freeware program from the PGP people for personal use. If anyone wants to bother with it – this is my public key:

Yea, I’m sure that this all made perfect sense to just about everyone who visits my blog. Does anyone still use this? I have a few certificates as well for reading email and viewing web pages. I don’t use them to communicate with anyone though. It isn’t like I have anything to hide to that is extreamly sensitive.

Manageable Content

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

The blogging phenomenon hasn’t caught on with most of the general population yet. Many people do know what the term “blog” is, but they wouldn’t know they were looking at it unless someone told them.

I showed my blog to someone and they couldn’t figure out how to navigate it. I had thought that it was self explanatory. It turns out that they didn’t understand that a blog is listed in a chronological order and not by topic. If only my blog supported categories, it may have been easier for them to get around.

Blogs, I have found, are great for that person who doesn’t know much HTML – just enough to get by. They are setup so that you just write an article and click a button. As you become more familiar with blogging, you begin to figure out how to do more stuff. Post photos, screen shots, audio, and links. Later on you also learn how to setup templates and get traffic to your site.

I have been trying to convince my wife and her sister that they should start blogging. Angel has blogged a few times on my blog, but she has only done it through sending an email address that I specially setup for her. Why? She likes googles method of checking her spelling and she understands how to use email. Koodo’s to her for taking that step.

My sister in-law actually has a website of her own already hosted over at geocities. Just looking at it tells me that this is one person destined to become a blogger. It is so much easier to organize all of that content and add more on the fly. I keep thinking that she would be the ideal blogger.

I realize that one of my strongest goals in life is to make things more manageable. I used to think that I was just plain lazy, but I understand that is not the case anymore. I do this with the code that I program in my job. I do this with how I setup my own blog. I do this with how I pay my bills and prepare my food. I always have this target goal that I want to make people have to think as little as possible so that they can get there job done easier.

Over blogged and underrated

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

After working on my blogging document for the past two days, I am up to 6,000 words. That means that I’m about 10% done with my little book. I have covered many topics so far and filled in some basic information. I’ll have to go in and extend on some of that information later on, but I’m having fun finding new topics to write about in the book.

I think the biggest problem plaguing most bloggers (including myself) is how to attract traffic. Traffic exchanges such as BlogAzoo, BlogExplosion, BlogClicker, and BlogCrowd seem to help out with driving hits to your blog. I feel like I’m becoming a mindless zombie just clicking through each page after twenty seconds pass.

A few people suggest that leaving comments help. Yea, they do – but these sites are usually the same ones that I found through a traffic exchange. This pretty much means that there is a good chance that they have already seen my blog within the rotation. Leaving comments is great as long as the author of the blog you are leaving feedback on does not participate in any of the traffic exchanges that I already use.

I think the only thing left to generate more hits is to start promoting myself outside of the blogosphere.

Search engines seem to be sending a few hits my way, but it isn’t enough to make any special mention of it. The two most popular terms that people are coming to my site for is “Jib Jab” and “Mitch Hedberg”.

Iraq rocks the vote

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

This weekend, Iraq voted for someone to lead them. A big step for an oppressed country. I don’t want to get too political, but there were many people who said that the United States couldn’t pull it off. Well, they were saying that the president couldn’t pull it off.

What some people fail to realize is that if there is a problem that needs to be solved, then we do everything to the best of our abilities to solve that problem. It doesn’t matter what country you are in. You never give up unless failure is certain. In this case, failure was just a bunch of bullies saying that we couldn’t do it.

I’ve noticed just about every picture covering the Iraq vote has people with blue fingers. I went ahead and got some blue paint and dabbled it on my thumb in celebration. Here is to you Iraq! You really rocked the vote!

I got a credit card

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

Although I have a very nice and well paying job, I have not been able to get a “real” credit card for a long time. I have been pre-approved for offers before, and with strange wording, I have even been approved for “offers”. However, today – I was approved for a credit line of $200. I wonder what helped me out.

I have had credit problems ever since my student loans went into default. The loans have been paid off for a few years now, but the consequences of going into default have been hitting me hard as they still appear on my credit report. I think they stay there for about seven years after they have been paid off. I wish that I knew how to extend the pay-off time to prevent them from going into default status back then.

I had once walked into a car dealership to purchase my Dodge Neon 2000 back in 1999. I agreed to pay half that day, and the other half the following day. The guys wouldn’t let me drive the car off the lot until the next day when I showed up with the other half. Bad credit has been plaguing me ever since I left college.

This couldn’t come at a better time. With the many fees that I have been paying out with my most recent paycheck and the next pay check, I have been wondering how I would be able to make it. My mother in-law just purchased us groceries because we were so low on funds. I canceled all payments on my next check to afford our lawyers fees. A credit line of two hundred dollars can actually go a long way in my current situation.

Blogectory

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

I was over at Meta’s Bubbling Bunch of Bloody Bull **** and noticed a link to the side for Blogectory. It looked like one of the buttons when I log into my BlogAzoo account. The odd thing is that this particular button doesn’t appear there.

I checked out the link and it is a directory that is practically empty. 38 blogs appear under the category of “Unlisted”. I was not able to find any other blogs in the directory.

I couldn’t figure out where my blog should fit under. Most directories that I have seen have an area for “Personal”, “Diary”, or “Journal” that I would fit under. I figured that I had my own sense of Society about me and plugged my blog under it. Of course, my link didn’t instantly appear.

I’ve got the impression that this may actually be an upcomming feature to BlogAzoo. I can’t wait to see all of the things that they start adding. If they keep adding new and cool things, then I’ll be happy as long as I can find a way to use it in my daily surf or networking.

I have been judged

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

I was looking at the statistics on my website again and saw that someone had linked to my blog. I clicked on the link and came upon a familiar site called **JUDGMENT**. Most of the sites that this person judges are pretty bad. I was glad with a sigh of relief that he wasn’t so judgmental when it came to critiquing my own website.

Here we go, a pretty good Blog after the shitpile I’ve had to wade through for the last couple of days. If your personal life isn’t remotely interesting, don’t Blog it, if your opinions aren’t insightful, don’t Blog them, if the shit you’ve dug up on the Internet is pointless, keep it to yourself. In other words if you have nothing to say and your brain is a wasteland shut up. This guy apparently knows all that, “apparently”, I say, because humanity never fails to disappoint me. We will see. The template is good, and the posts fail to offend me. Yes, Hedberg is cool. B

My comment:

Don’t worry, I cover everything so I’m sure I will be able to offend you sooner or later. The good news is that if I do get boring, it is usually only temporary. Thanks for the link!

BlogAzoo Shout-OUTS

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

I’ve started using some additional features in BlogAzoo such as using Shout-Out’s and watching other blogs. I found my own Shout-OUT and figured that I would post something. I write “I am just so cool!”. I got a kick out of the response.

Posting a Shout-OUT to Yourself?

Man, you must be lonely. Take a look around Blogazoo a bit and make some friends. There’s a whole community here.

White Trash Quiz

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

I was over at The Bubba Principal and saw a little test to see if he was white trash. He got 55% white trash. I went ahead and took the test.

I’m only 12% white trash. I don’t know if I’m supposed to be happy or shocked. However, they do provide the following disclaimer:

*** DISCLAIMER!!! ***

These tests ARE NOT SCIENTIFIC MEASUREMENTS of what kind of person you are. Love or hate labels and stereotypes, they exist. So why not make fun of them! If you don’t get the joke, then that says something about your sense of humor, or the lack of one.

I am 12% White Trash.
Not at all White Trashy!

I, my friend, have class. I am so not white trash. . I am more than likely Democrat, and my place is neat, and there is a good chance I may never drink wine from a box.
