Sync on Green

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

I got linux installed on my PS2, however - none of my monitors are compatible with the mysteriouse Sync on green phenomenon. I have an Envision EN-7100e 17″ LCD Flat Panel that I purchased this a few years back (September 29, 2001). Looking for information regarding Sync on Green turns up nothing useful for me except the playstation support site. I also have a Dell e773c CRT monitor that came free with a Dell computer that I recently purchased.

I don’t know what this “Sync on Green” is all about or why the PS2 is so picky about it. Is this Sync on Green a new thing that came out recently? Why is it that there are not that many monitors that are supported when looking at the database that other PS2 linux users have contributed to?

Maybe I can find a cheap monitor on ebay or something that supports it - but I’m not really willing to pay for it. I guess I’ll end up making the PS2 compatible with TV resolutions and then setting up VPC/VNC with it - but I’d prefer a resolution of at least 800×600. even 640×480 would be nicer then what a television offers. It is getting late and I am not really in the mood for any more troubleshooting with this delema.

Linux on the PS2

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

Well, I figured since this VNC/VPC stuff worked for the Mac, and seems to be a cross-platform standard, that I would start setting up my PS2 again. I got the linux package for my PS2 a while back (maybe a year ago?). I had actually purchased it twice. The first time was for over $200 - but they canceled my order and stated that it was out of stock. Bummer! A few months later they had a special promotion that was half the price - so I went ahead and purchased it again. That time it came and I was happy.

I was able to setup xwindows and do a few things - but the view was horrible with the resolution that my television offered. Eventually, Final Fantasy XI came out and had a hard drive as well for the PS2. I couldn’t run both Final Fantasy and Linux on the same hard drive. PS2 just couldn’t install PS2 related stuff on a seperate partition - it needed the entire drive. I started swapping between drives at first, but then I seemed to stick with the Final Fantasy drive since I had such a hard time dealing with xwindows.

Since I hadn’t played Final Fantasy much, I canceled my subscription at the beginning of September. Actually, I don’t even play the PS2 that much. So since the whole Mac thing came up and was configured to work on my network, I figured I would setup Linux on the PS2 in my room.

I’ve been having some problems getting my monitor to work with the PS2 - maybe it doesn’t support Sync on Green? The TV is hooked up rite now while it goes through the installation process. Maybe the monitor will work after installation. I setup the system to install everything, so it has been taking a while to setup. In the mean time, I’ve been doing laundry and cleaning up a little here and there.

If everything goes well, I’ll be able to setup xwindows, a VNC/VPC server, Mono, and Seti@Home on this little box. I also need to make sure I can see shared drives on the windows network (including the Mac) using Samba. Wish me luck!

Blog Explosion Working

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

Ok, I didn’t think it would work rite away, but when I look at some of my statistics reports, BlogExplosion is on the top of the list of top referrers. I figured my www.lewismoten.com address would hold the top for some time since it gets a significant amount of traffic already.

The downside is that I don’t know if anyone is actually sticking around to read what I have. Blog Explosion is setup to require you to sit at a site for about 30 seconds and then allows you to move onto the next site. Someone might be setting there only to watch the timer tick down from 30 seconds and ignoring my content.

Ok, this means that Blog Explosion has delivered on its promis - more visitors to my website. So now I need to figure out how long people are staying around. Maybe I could create a javascript to make a call with an onunload event for the body of my template …

Today: Mac Seti & Atom API

Saturday, October 16th, 2004

I’ve been sleeping a lot today. My wife came in and woke me up at 10:30 today. I drove her and my sister in-law down to Fredricksburgh to check out a dieting program. I sat through and listend to the woman give her little intro to the program. The gist of it was this
- You eat 6 meals a day
- You come in 3 times a week
- First 10 weeks are free, but you pay about 200 dollars in taxes on the supplements, etc.
- A one year membership is $1000

The first thing I heard about is a requirement to come in 3 times a week. I get home between 6 and 7:30 on weekdays. I looked over at the hours posted on the window. They seemed to close at all different times depending on the day of the week it was - and the latest was 7:00 PM. Well that kinda blows the idea out of the water since it takes at least a half hour to drive down to fredericksburgh without rush hour traffic on 95 and Rte. 1.

The woman didn’t say the price out loud and the two girls promptly folded there papers before I could see them. I was asking Angel how much it was .. $50 per month, $100? She said it wasn’t like that. I can see why now, the payment system is messed up.

We took off and the girls pretty much figured it was a waste of our time to come down when the woman could have told us this over the phone. We then stopped over at Moms house. My other sister in-law went into some detail about the weight loss plan that she was on herself. LA Weight Loss. The programs were very simular in what I was hearing, except that LA Weight Loss didn’t have any appetite suppressors at all. Also, LA Weight Loss allows you to phone in your measurements and stuff rather then drive in 3 times a week. I looked them up on there website and they have an office close to me in Dale City. The price was also lower - I think she said either $5 or $12 a week … I can’t remember.

From there on we went over to the tobacco shop in Aquia to pick up some clove cigarettes for the girls. The price was much lower then what I usually pay, and Angel paid for them this time. On the way out, Angel saw some oils that she really liked and went back to purchase those as well.

Onto home I went … I made some Boo-Berry cereal and then went to sleep. I woke up later and made some Tina Pizza Burritos. I played on my Mac some more getting everything updated. I went over to the Mono website figuring I could install .Net onto the Mac. Good news is that I could install it on Mac OS X - bad news is that I needed version 10.3 and I only had 10.2.8 - ugh! I searched the net for prices on 10.3 and saw it was around $80. That shot my hopes down a lot. I don’t even know if my machine could handle it.

I messed around with the Seti program that I downloaded for the Mac and finally figured out how to change the settings. When I first installed it, I setup the proxy to use a Socks server because I figured that I could hook it into my SetiQueu server and keep track of its performance against my other computers working on the project. For ever since, it has been stuck at “Connecting to server …”. I tried uninstalling and installing. I tried looking at the contents of the package hoping I could edit the settings manually with the text editor. By chance, I fired it up once and clicked cancel instead of logging into my account. Finally, the menu items to change the settings for this program were enabled and I was able to change the proxy settings. So here is a screen shot of seti in action on my Mac!

After getting Seti setup, I began working on my Atom client again. I was interested in getting my XML code to be more efficient. I was traversing the document object model looking for child nodes of child nodes with defined attributes … It was a mess. I worked with xPath before in javascript, so I wanted to use that with .Net. This allows me to get a collection of the specific nodes that I want in just one call.

I was doing ok, but it seemed that my xPath was always returning no results. After some Googling on the newsgroups, I realized that a namespace was comming accross with the xml that I received. It turns out that I needed to use a namespace manager with my xpath query. I was eventually able to get everything working with the following code:

XmlNamespaceManager nsmgr = new XmlNamespaceManager(doc.NameTable);
nsmgr.AddNamespace(”atom”, “http://purl.org/atom/ns#”);
XmlNodeList links = doc.SelectNodes(”/atom:feed/atom:link[@type=’application/x.atom+xml’ and @rel=’service.post’ and @href and @title]”, nsmgr);

This xpath sets it up so I don’t have to check to see if an attribute exists before I obtain its content. Well, I still have a few other parts of the code to tweak with xPath before that is ready. The last part of this Atom client that I’m working on figuring out is how to get a list of all of my entries. I found out how to get an Atom Feed - but it appears to hold about 10 entries, and I have well over 100. I’ve seen some documentation on the Atom API in general covering searching entries, but I haven’t seen anything specific to blogger.com.

The Rogue Angel

Saturday, October 16th, 2004

I found this website on blog explosion and thought the template was nice to look at. Plus my wifes nick name is Angel, so I am curiously drawn to anything on the internet regarding Angels for some weird reason.

Love …

Saturday, October 16th, 2004

I saw this quiz over by the Rogue Angel and tried it out. This reminds me of high school for some reason. Maybe my wife (Angel) will think it is mighty cute of me to do this. Maybe she will laugh at how hopeless I am sometimes when it comes to being a romantic. Either way … I love ya Angel.
