The future has gone too far

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

I don’t know if you guys have heard of this or not. But you can buy a toilet that spits water at your behind. It will also send warm heat your way to dry off. Better yet, it also has an air purifier. Toilet paper will soon be a thing of the past (just like the 3 shells).

With its pulsating action, I’m confused weather this is simply a toilet, or a new form of adult entertainment. These things even have a remote control. Honestly, who ever heard of a toilet with a remote control? You are sitting rite there! It’s not like you have to get up to turn on the TV.

For maximum comfort, your Washlet uses a streamlined wand that extends to provide a soothing warm flow of aerated water for complete cleansing. What’s more, the Washlet offers a wide array of innovative features. There’s a soothing warm air dryer. For additional comfort, a heated seat. We even took your olfactory senses into consideration by including an air purifier. And the nozzle automatically self cleans before and after each use. Of course, Washlets are designed for both men and women of all ages.

Site Grabber Screenshot

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

Here is a screenshot of my Site Grabber in action! I made this program to download HTML files from another website in a small data-mining project that I’m doing for a friend. I’ll just put this one in my bag of tricks. Tomarrow I get to start learning how to pull the data out of those files that I just downloaded tonight.

Site Grabber

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

I made a small Console application that grabs all the HTML files from a website called Site Grabber. If you have ever seen screen scraping utilities before, then this one is no different. You start it up by passing the url you want to start off with as a parameter:

SiteGrabber.exe http://www.yourdomain.com/

The utility will go out to that URL and download the source code of the HTML returned. It saves that code to your hard drive. It then parses out all links from the source code and converts them to full URLs - just in case they are only relative URLs. For example, if one of the links on the page is “News.htm”, then it will change the link to “http://www.yourdomain.com/News.htm”.

My program then goes through all the links and repeats the process. It has enough brains to remember what links it has visited before, and can also limit itself to follow through to other links a limited number of times. So if page1.htm points to page2.htm, then it will only go to page2.htm if it isn’t already nested too deep. If you can’t catch on, don’t worry. I’m not always that great at explaining myself.

The program can also be restricted so that it does not follow external links - meaning that if you are on www.yourdomain.com, and a link points to www.anotherdomain.com, then it will not go to that other domain unless you explicitly tell it to do so. Here is the small help text that shows up if you get it wrong:

SiteGrabber.exe <url> <depth> <offsite>

name default description——- ———– ————————————————-url Required The url that you wish to download. (required)depth 0 The number of links to follow from the main page.offsite false Do you wish to follow links off-site?

Now … I wonder if I could get some cash for this program. I have tons of scripts on the net, but I never actively pursued cash for them before. It would probably have to be made a bit more friendly if I wanted to sell it. Bah! There is less then 200 lines of code to this program anyway.

The day after tomarrow

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

Ok, it seems that TV was making a big deal about this movie. So was my wife. I got the movie for her this past weekend and she watched it with her mother and sister. I came home and watched it today. I just couldn’t get into it. I kept wanting to change the channel but continued to realize that I was watching a movie and that I would have to get up and switch the tv manually to see cable TV. Yea - I’m that lazy. The effects were ok, but some of this stuff really was weird. Like the fact that the father would walk all the way from Pennsylvania up to Manhatten, NY with snow shoes and bad weather conditions.

Meetings in the cube

Tuesday, October 19th, 2004

Ok, my cube is larger then most people here in the office. However, that doesn’t give people the rite to come in and start meetings and act like I’m not there. What happened is a co-worker was consulting with me on a problem. He turns around and another co-worker comes in and talks to him. Then two more come in. I get tired of it and walk to the rest room to take a breather.

Oh, here is another scenario that I’ve been through. Two co-workers came in and I discuss with them a solution to a problem that we can take. Now that we agree, I start working on it. The problem is that these two just stand behind me and watch me do the work. Argh! It aggrivates me when I have vultures watching my every move. It makes me feel like they expect the problem to be fixed in any minute now. It also makes it hard to think.

Let the code monkey be!

Well, I think all of this bottled up frustration and annoyance is my depression making its way back. Little things are setting me off again and I can recognize some other signs of what had happened before I went on the medication. Unfortunately, my medication is very low so I have been spreading it out some - skipping every other day.

I forgot it over two days and my head started feeling funny - pulsating kind of. I told my wife about it and she said she has the same problems when she misses just one dose and feels like she might pass out from it. I hope my prescription comes in the mail soon. I wish my health plan would let me pick the stuff up at my local pharmacy.

C# on Mac OS X 10.2.6

Tuesday, October 19th, 2004

Ok, I just happened to come accross a website today regarding C# for multi-os platforms. Looking at one of the screenshots, I could see that the sofware was running on Mac OS X 10.2.6 - this is cool because I have 10.2.8. It looks like I may be able to work my skillz onto the Mac platform!

Fixed my Gnome

067 Gnome

067 Gnome,
originally uploaded by lewismoten.

Ok, I found that Angel ran off with all of the super glue when we came home from the store the other day. I got one of them and helped reattach my gnomes left foot. He still has a bright smile on his face, so I doubt there is much trauma over the whole issue.

My life is connected

Monday, October 18th, 2004

Huzzah! My internet connection seems to be back up. I called into Comcast like I said I would. A woman answered the phone and I immediately got the impression that she was from the area of Persia - perhaps India or Packistan. She went over the usual steps with me …

  • Disconnect power cable
  • Disconnect network cable
  • Disconnect coaxile cable
  • Wait about 1 minute
  • Plug in coaxile cable
  • Plug in power cable
  • Wait for the 4 blinking lights to become solid

The furthest it would get is 3 solid lights and 1 blinking light. I could tell when she told the modem to reset itself because all the lights would go out and we would restart from scratch again. A technitian was scheduled to come out Wednesday morning. I guess it takes a while to get here from India. I went outside to check the cables to see if any tampering was done, but everything looked in order.

Well, since the girls were out, I figured I would pass the time and replace an old electrical outlet. I’m not your average handyman. I’m more of a below average handyman. The girls came in and Angel let me turn off the main breaker. The lights remained on with lots of beeping. Could something be wrong? No - although I’m not an average handyman, I am a major geek. Everyones batteries are hooked up to lights, computers, VCR’s - the works. I even dragged one of my batteries downstairs to plug a lamp into it so I could see the wireing.

The hardest part of the job was seperating the receptical from the wires. They were stick in through the back and wedged in. I’m used to seeing them screwed in the sides, so this was kind of new to me. I don’t know if there is an easy way to get these out, but I eventually got them. I hooked up the new recepticle and told Angel to throw the switch. The true test … FAILED!!!! All that work for nothing.

Well, I called a buddy of mine and told him that I couldn’t help him out with a data mining problem until Wednesday night - since the cable guy was comming that morning. He was cool and let it rest. Apparently he already spent 2 days looking this stuff up and writing it by hand. Most of his data mining jobs are simple. Some are hard … but mostly simple. He usually wants a list of companies and a telephone number in Excel. Nothing a few programming tricks and a nice regular expression couldn’t handle. I still need to see the site before I can tell what I’m up against.

Anyway, I hung up and figured I would start putting things back together again. I had disconnected the UPS from the cable modem, router, and a few computers. I was curiouse about the coaxile cable. I had it hooked up through the surge protector before. I decided I would just skip the surge protector and go strait to the modem. I pluged in the modem and walked out of the room for a moment.

I came back and guess what? I saw 4 solid lights. Could this be? Is it really so? I hooked up the router and ran to my room … I was able to hit the Google website. Ok, it isn’t cached data is it? I ran over to the News site for Google - Bingo! I was online. I ran downstairs to check on my wifes computer. It worked!

So … my problems are finally over. I can hit sites with the speed I am used to. I need to call the cable man in India to let them know that he is no longer needed.

Connection Woes

Monday, October 18th, 2004

My internet connection has gone from bad to worse at home. It seems someone else has a DHCP server on the network at 192.168.100.11. My lan runs at 192.168.1.*, but my router keeps getting an address signed up from the other LAN. Also, I’ve been having a lot of problems resetting it a lot. I’ve tried spoofing different MAC addresses and sometimes I’ll get a new legitamate IP address from my cable company, and other times I don’t. I tried hooking the cable modem directly into a computer rather then setting it up on the router. Even through I get a dynamic IP assigned to me, I still have a ton of problems when pinging the cable companies router. What is up with that?

My wife keeps saying the problem is with the Macintosh since that is the newest addition on the house and when I talk about MAC addresses, it seems like i’m talking about the Macintosh (a.k.a. “Mac”). I’ve unplugged the thing a few times just to prove to her that it had nothing to do with the Mac itself.

I went online and paid the cable bill. I figure it will give me weight when I complain that there service is not working. They usually tell me it is a problem with my router. Since I hooked the service up to my computer directly after keeping the modem turned off for 5 minutes - They can’t complain about this one. They always think that I’m some idiot that doesn’t know anything about networking. Actually, I think they just don’t like troubleshooting when they don’t know what the answer is. Why can’t you guys admit it if you don’t know? Just swallow your pride and say: “I don’t know - call back when Mr. X is working during normal business hours”.
